Carl Mayfield, VATACF member and long-time MDTACF supporter is shown below preparing scion wood for nutgrafting at workshop in March of 2007 Now is the time for Nut-grafting! January and February are the best times to cut scions from American chestnut trees and graft them onto American chestnut nuts. If they grow, you will have a clone of your scion wood tree that can be planted in a new location. Carl Mayfield, shown above, is an expert on this method of propagation. He graciously allowed us to take video at his nut-grafting clinic last winter, and he wrote out detailed instructions for every step of preparation and nurture, which can be found here: Instructions for nut grafting from Carl Mayfield If you are interested in trying this method, you may contact Essie Burnworth at (301)762-6715 or hburnworth@msn.com to borrow a DVD of the clinic. If you need American chestnut nuts for this purpose, please contact Robert Strasser at (240)285-8199 or strasser@hood.edu to get some of our Chapter’s supply of nuts. Good luck!
